Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to feature one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that limited his singing ability. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the group. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
